Twin Loves: Penhaligon’s X Maggi Hambling

Scent has been firmly back on the fashion and culture agenda this year, with a rise in independent fragrance houses creating innovative scents accompanied by seductive art, design and content, as well as the reimagining of classics. No house could be more classic than icon of British perfumery, Penhaligon’s. After 155 years of perfumed storytelling and desirous design, Penhaligon’s unveiled the grand reopening of its Regent Street flagship, a lavish, visionary refurbishment that looks firmly to the future without relinquishing the past. In collaboration with acclaimed interior architecture studio Michaelis Boyd, the house has created its most luxurious expression to date, in an immersive ode to scent, story and British craft.

Marking the moment, artist Maggi Hambling reimagines 155 bottles of Endymion Concentré as collectible emblems of a house stepping boldly into its next chapter, each with its own Maggi Hambling ribbon and ink on paper edition.

Craftsmanship anchors the space. A bronze lion-shaped fragrance profiling table by Hamish Mackie commands attention, and a hand-painted mural by Claire Basler evokes pastoral romance. A mosaic entrance by the London School of Mosaic and a bespoke chessboard by Carl Fox and Sofia Karakatsanis extend the narrative.

At the heart of the store design is William’s Green, the brand’s Pantone-registered hue, washing marbles, woods and textiles in a tone that feels heritage-rich and newly assertive. Sustainable, reclaimed materials lend tactile depth, while lighting by Joe Armitage casts a warm, considered glow.
