Twin Picks: She Drives, She Surfs

This week is the last chance to see Vogue photographer and Taylor-Wessing finalist Juanita Richards debut solo show, She Drives / She Surfs in Miami. In this striking body of work, the artist brings together a rich collection of beautifully captured photographs of car culture meeting surf culture in her diasporic homeland of Jamaica. The photos capture the sisterhoods born out of women in the Caribbean car scene and the surf collective Surf Girls Jamaica. For the artist, the project seems to expand what she sees as too-often-simplified stories of Caribbean life as viewed through a narrow Western lens. She has previously exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and been featured in Dazed, Nowness and Vogue, alongside collaborations with Chanel and the appeal of the photos speaks for itself, we imagine we’ll see a lot more of her work to come.

“This body of work was born from love. It began with a return to the Caribbean, the place where I feel most present. Throughout this journey, I saw that feeling of belonging reflected in the women around me: in the way they move through their communities, behind the wheel, and in the ocean”.

“The energy I encountered was pure and community-led. I witnessed women gathering around sport and the sea, finding spaces that offered both healing and escapism”.

“For me, these photographs are an act of witnessing—a record of women who are already writing their own stories.” — Juanita Richards
