I was doing work experience at i-D Magazine for a few months. At the time they were putting together the November 1997 issue. I was assisting Edward Enninful, and we were putting together a story on the 50 most influential people in fashion. Alexander McQueen was one of the sitters. The shoot happened in Metro Studios on Peartree Street, London. Craig McDean was taking the picture. From memory McQueen wore denim stone washed. I remember his mohican… I felt really nervous meeting him – as I was thrown into it with no ideas or preparation- the rest of the shoot was a bit raucous!! I remember him coming out with the brilliant line: “If I’ve influenced fashion it’s by pissing everyone off.” At that time he was really playing up to the role of fashion’s ‘enfant terrible’. It was clearly just an act – you could tell he was a really nice, delicate guy under it all.
