Nick Dorey’s intimate backstage images of London Fashion Week have us lusting over Spring/Summer 2012’s offerings already…

With her first solo show at London Fashion Week, Simone Rocha delivered a collection full of her kind of irresistible androgynous tailoring. This time though, there were clear plastic macs over white lace and pastel-fluoro dresses that gave a ladylike edge to her structured layering.

Gender-defying perspex heeled brogues played with our ideas of masculine and feminine, while the models with their fly-away Mohawks cut it like fragile punks.

At Paul Smith, it was all about silk shirts stolen from an English Gentleman’s wardrobe, worn loose and deep on the Riviera. The whitest tailoring was punctuated by bright blues and warm yellows while linen blazers, leopard print loafers and sharp trilbys made this a collection of the perfect men’s holiday wear, but fit to kit out the girls.

Twin enjoyed exclusive backstage access to some of London Fashion Week’s finest shows. As ever, the city served up a hurricane of originality and freshness. Here’s a pick of our best moments.

BURBERRY PRORSUM

There was clearly no escaping the UK’s increasingly Baltic winters, as fur embellished coats replaced last seasons studs and cable knit and cosy cross-check swing jackets took centre stage. Determined to brave the elements, the girls appeared in identical Perspex capes over their already weather-friendly looks.

But it wasn’t all climate control. There were silk round-neck and long-sleeved shift dresses that ballooned in stiff shapes at the skirt.

SPOTTED: Kate Bosworth and Rachel Bilson were flown in for the occasion!

JW ANDERSON

A favourite among LFW’s young crop of designers, J W Anderson, gave us one of the most wearable women’s collection. It was full of pleated maxi skirts, brightly coloured knits and his own preppy twist on mohair and feathers. Anderson’s minimalist approach to tailoring ranged from the perfect white shirt and trousers to fiercely cut paisley suits. His no nonsense approach was dispatched by models in chunky storm trooper boots.

MARK FAST

All the famous wool knits were present and correct in the shape of oversized putty coloured jumpers and slinky black cob web dresses. Bringing the edge was some hardcore leather that featured S&M buckles, straps and constricting necks in sleek black, red and cream. The look was oil-slick cool and indisputalbly fast.

SPOTTED: VV Brown, Nat and Leah Weller, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Jo Wood, Janice Dickenson and Maria Diamondis of Marina and the Diamonds.

According to designers Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, their summer collection, which showed this week in London, pays visual homage to, “the off colour schemes of Seventies interiors, and the faded exteriors of modernist architecture”. Exquisite draped garments in hues from stony mushroom, to vivid Dayglo orange blended in, and stood out, against the concrete backdrop of the Selfridges car park. The designs were structural in shape, echoing the show’s architectural theme, yet it managed to be one of the most wearable collections we’d seen all week. Twin’s top look was one of their printed dresses, made from a manipulation of the iconic Liberty paisley print, distorted and over-sized to magnificent effect.

“Hand-embroidery is an art,” says designer Christopher Kane of his latest collection. “But we see so much of it done in a conventional way. I wanted to make it a little more perverse by adding the leather and the black lace.” With a show that walked the line between intricate yet edgy, Kane adorned PVC, leather and lace with an abundance of poppies, daisies and thistles. A look accessorised with mid-calf, lace-up black boots.

Shift dresses, tunics and skirts were given a hint of Glastonbury Tor with artfully embroidered rainbow coloured crystals. Whilst peek-a-boo lace worn with leather added oomph to night-time dressing. We certainly can’t recall a time when flora and fauna needlework provoked such a thrill.

Stylist Katie Grand took her lead from the Girl Guide’s motto “Be Prepared” for this season’s outdoorsy themed show from Topshop Unique. Functional and protective wear was given a lux overhaul with fake fur and soft chiffon. Models morphed into wildlife with the help of animalistic accessories – headdresses, antlers and furry eyebrows – and a woodland-like leaf-strewn catwalk.

Twin’s highlight though were the satchels and sheepskin bags with brilliant harness straps. We can’t wait until next winter – so the question is – Topshop, how can we get one now?
