Paper X Paper
Thin pulped fibres pressed into shapes that can be cut, soaked and impressed with a particular artistic vision, paper is the axis point of curator and artist Cathy Lomax’s show at Transition gallery.
Including work from established artists and recent graduates, Pulp Fictions aims to show how common paper has become the centre of many contemporary artists work.
Twin spoke to Cathy Lomax about the exhibition…
Why did you plump for paper as the subject of the show?
Paper is such a versatile medium, it is cheap and plentiful and this means that it is much easier to experiment with without the worry about ruining an expensively prepared canvas.
I also like the way that children use paper. When they draw or paint they enter the world that they are creating and I wanted to carry a bit of this involvement and spontaneity into Pulp Fictions – like each artist is creating their own little fantasy world on paper.
How is it important to your own work?
I personally really like working on paper – I can produce large series of work quickly and freely. It was because of my own attraction to it that I started to notice the many different ways that other artists were using it. I became interested in the democracy and versatility of it as a medium.
How did you choose which artists to feature?
Firstly of course they were all artists who I thought were making interesting work on paper such as Virginia Verran who won the 2010 Jerwood Drawing Prize. Some of them are artists that we have worked with before and are quite well established such as Emma Talbot, Phillip Allen and Jake Clark. Many of them are quite new emerging artists – with their own fresh approach and enthusiasm to making work such as Ruby Cedar and Kathryn Newman. I think this mixture makes the show more interesting.
Pulp Fictions is at Transitions Gallery until 25 September 2011.

My brother suggested I might like this blog. He was once entirely right. This post actually made my day. You can not consider simply how so much time I had spent for this information! Thank you!
